Legendary '60s Rockers Hit No. 1 With New Anthem 61 Years After Their First Topper
Rock and roll has no expiration date. For proof, look to The Rolling Stones, who just scored another No. 1 hit with their new anthemic single, "In the Stars."
The lead track off their upcoming 25th studio album, Foreign Tongues, the song leans into the Stones' signature rock with a polished production behind it.
Written by core songwriting duo Mick Jaggerand Keith Richards, the tune waxes philosophical about destiny and emotional resilience, pointing to love and certainty as the only currency worth anything in a world marked by chaos and unpredictability.
Released on May 5, the single shot up to No. 1 on two charts in the United Kingdom: the Official Vinyl Singles and Official Physical Singles charts, Forbes reported. The feat marks the band's fifthNo. 1 hit, following "Angry," "Living in a Ghost Town," "Ride ‘Em on Down," and their first, "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction," which spent two weeks at the top in 1965.
Accompanying the track is a stellar music video featuring Marty Supreme's Odessa A'zion and directed by Francois Rousselet, who also helmed the Stones' videos for "Angry" and "Ride ‘Em on Down." As for the band, Rousselet utilized de-aging technology to take the guys back to the 1970s. It's pretty trippy.
Foreign Tongues, dropping July 10, has a few other surprises for longtime fans, including a guest appearance from The Cure's Robert Smith.
Reflecting on the moment the two decided to collaborate, Jagger said, via Louder, "I turned up one day to do my vocals in London, and there's this bloke standing there with his back to me with this long gown on. And when he turned around, he was covered in lipstick. And I said - I'd never met him before - ‘You're Robert Smith of The Cure!' He said, ‘Yeah!' And I said, ‘Well, while you're here then, you better go and do something.'"
The follow up to 2023's Hackney Diamonds, the album also features Paul McCartney, SteveWinwood, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers' Chad Smith. According to Louder, the record was finished in less than a month at Metropolis Studios, with four tracks added from previous sessions.
In addition to the first track, the Stones have released their second single, "Rough and Twisted." At the time of writing, neither song has yet to break into the Billboard Hot 100, but it's far too early to underestimate rock's most enduring hitmakers.
