1979 Rock Classic Is Suddenly Climbing the Charts 47 Years Later
Nearly 47 years after its original release, Michael Jackson's legendary album Off the Wall is climbing the Billboard 200 chart.
The record, which was initially released on August 10, 1979, is currently sitting at the No. 120 spot of the Billboard 200 chart, a list that ranks the best-performing albums in the music industry. Off the Wall is currently one of six Jackson albums back on the chart, marking a definitive resurgence of the iconic star's music and reaffirming his unique ability to create enduring hits.
Off the Wall is enjoying a strong multi-week stay on the Billboard 200, having reentered the chart on May 16 for the first time since late 2009 following Jackson's tragic death. The album's new milestone adds to its over 120 weeks of total charting time across various Billboard metrics. Its highest historical charting position was achieved in 1980, when the record peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard 200.
Off the Wall served as Jackson's fifth studio album and marked his first official collaboration with the iconic producer Quincy Jones, who would also go on to produce his record-shattering smash Thriller. The album marked the singer's first major solo breakthrough outside of his family's band, The Jackson 5 and produced two No. 1 hits on the Billboard Hot 100: "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough" and "Rock with You." Two other songs from the tracklist also secured spots within the top ten, with "Off the Wall" and "She's Out of My Life" both peaking at No. 10.
Almost five decades after its initial release, Off the Wall continues to resonate with new listeners through the digital era. On Spotify alone, the album has accumulated over 2.2 billion collective streams, affirming its status as one of the greatest albums of all time.
The Michael Movie
The sudden mainstream rediscovery of Jackson's discography is the direct result to his recent blockbuster biopic, Michael. The film premiered domestically on April 24 and has already grossed over $795.1 million worldwide.
Michael is a two-hour film that retells the first 30 years of Jackson's life, covering his childhood with the Jackson 5 through his 1987 career peak during the Bad album era. The biopic has deeply resonated with audiences, exploring Jackson's tumultuous relationship with his abusive father and showcasing high-definition performance reenactments that leave viewers entranced by his effortless stage presence. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film has earned an impressive 97% audience score, attesting to the film's profound connection with its viewers.
Since the movie's release, the public has been sent into a Jackson-fever of sorts, with many young people taking to streaming platforms to explore his catalog while older generations relish in the current Jackson renaissance. Due to this reignited public fascination with the King of Pop, Jackson has experienced a 116% surge in monthly streams across several different platforms.
