LEGO Batman Legacy Of The Dark Knight Out Now On PS5, Xbox, And PC

LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight is out now on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store. TT Games, the studio behind LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, released it last Friday, with Deluxe Edition owners getting in three days early. It's the most ambitious LEGO game the studio has ever built, and from the looks of it, Batman games are back on the menu.

Bruce Wayne's Origin Story, Told Across An Open-World Gotham

The story follows Bruce Wayne from the beginning: training with The League of Shadows, becoming the Dark Knight, and gradually building the family of allies that defines the Caped Crusader's world. It's an origins story that pulls from across the Batman canon, blending moments from comics, films, television, and games into an original story that TT Games describes as the "definitive Batman story." Seven chapters total, with a prologue kicking things off, resulting in a unique narrative that will have several callouts from all of your favorite Batman media throughout history.

What makes this extra interesting is that this story is not told in a linear fashion, and Gotham City itself is a full open-world for the first time in a LEGO game. Four densely populated islands, with lots of verticality both upward into the skyline and downward underground. You can zip between buildings with the Grapple Launcher, glide across rooftops, or just take the Tumbler out for a spin through familiar locations: Ace Chemicals, Gotham Botanical Gardens, Wayne Tower, and Arkham Asylum. The world is your oyster in this game, although we can imagine oysters in this world are hard to chew on. Because they're made of LEGOs, duh.

A Combat System Inspired by Arkham, Built to Be Approachable

It's always going to be sad to know that the Arkham series ended with Batman's anticlimactic death in Suicide Squad Kill: The Justice League, but thankfully, Rocksteady's legacy continues on through the gameplay mechanics it introduced, which other games eventually adapted or improved.

The new LEGO Batman combat system is one clear example, taking clear inspiration from the Arkham series' free-flow combat, adapted to be more accessible without losing the feel of Batman moving through a crowd. Attack chains, takedowns, and gadgets all factor in. Batman's Batarangs distract and stun, while the Batclaw drags enemies in close. It's faster and more physical than anything previous LEGO games attempted, to the point that it sometimes feels like a LEGO game doesn't have any business having combat this deep.

There are also six allies that are playable across the campaign, each with their own gear and signature moves. Jim Gordon carries a Foam Sprayer and Rebound Launcher. Robin brings Birdarangs and a Cable Launcher. Nightwing fights with Electrorangs and an Electric Cable Launcher. Batgirl has a Hackarang and a deployable drone. Catwoman uses her whip and brings around a loyal kitten companion. Finally, Talia al Ghul rounds out the roster with Blowdarts. Usually controlled by AI, a second player can jump in locally in couch-coop mode and control whoever is Batman's current ally.

Build And Manage Your Very Own Batcave

Many nerds fantasize about having their own Batcave, and this game will let you live out that fantasy. The Batcave, built beneath Wayne Manor, functions as Batman's central hub and expands throughout the campaign. It houses 100 outfits from all across Batman history, from classic suits to film variants. It's also the garage for every Batmobile and Batcycle in the game, each faithfully rendered in LEGO brick form. You can upgrade gadgets, review case files on the Batcomputer, and customize the space itself with Batcave decor items. So, it's not just a hub for gameplay purposes, there's some customization that you can do to personalize your very own Batcave.
