New Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Expansion "Songs of the Past" Sees Geralt Return One Final Time Before Ciri Takes The Reins

The medallion's humming. CD Projekt Red has officially announced The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt DLC Songs of the Past, a brand new expansion that will take players back on the Path with Geralt of Rivia. The reveal dropped on the official Witcher Twitter account, almost seemingly out of nowhere, setting the community ablaze. Songs of the Past is coming to PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5 in 2027, with more details promised in late summer. It's being co-developed with Fool's Theory, the studio currently building the official Witcher 1 remake.

But to those who were paying attention, this announcement may still have come as a surprise because of its timing, but it may have been something they've already seen coming.

Polish Analyst Predicted New Witcher 3 Expansion Back In December

If you've been following this story closely, you'd be familiar with the December 2025 report from Polish outlet Strefa Inwestorów, which cited a Noble Securities research note from analyst Mateusz Chrzanowski. The note predicted a Witcher 3 DLC release in May 2026, framing it as a commercial and marketing bridge to the next Witcher game, serving as the player's last rodeo with Geralt before moving on with Ciri in the next game.

The launch itself didn't land in May (just like how GTA6isn't out yet), but the announcement's schedule still led to some credence to the report. While investment analysts don't always get gaming forecasts right, this case proved that Chrazonwski's DLC prediction was correct, if the timing of its release itself wasn't.

For the fans who haven't been following closely, this might come as a surprise since the last expansion for The Witcher 3, Blood and Wine, launched in 2016. It's been ten years, and we're still getting a surprise expansion. The fact that CD Projekt Red is returning to Wild Hunt at all speaks to just how singular this game's cultural footprint has been, bringing it to Skyrim levels.

While a new mainline game in the series hasn't been released for almost a decade, the franchise momentum has only grown thanks to the Netflix series, the upcoming Witcher 1 remake, and the continued anticipation around The Witcher 4. But given how long the development cycle has been for the next mainline game, despite the commercial success of Cyberpunk 2077, having a new expansion as a stopgap still makes a lot of business sense for CD Projekt Red, and the place of Withcer in the cultural zeitgeist makes this possible for them.

Unfortunately, aside from the fact that we know this expansion exists and is coming next year, CD Projekt Red has not revealed any other details about it. No plot, setting, new features, and whatnot. In the meantime, Geralt continues to make crossover appearances across other games while we wait. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt: Songs of the Past DLC launches in 2027 on PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5.
