1980 Soaring Oscar-Nominated Hit Ballad Remains an Anthem of Self-Reliance and Resilience
In 1980, music fans were inspired by a hit movie ballad that became an anthem of self-reliance and resilience.
Irene Cara sang "Out Here on My Own" for a spotlight moment in the feature film Fame. Her character, Coco Hernandez, is shown alone, seated at a piano, sans the flashy choreography and big ensemble moments of the movie musical's previous scenes, performing the poignant tune.
Throughout Fame, Coco was portrayed as ambitious and determined. However, the song displayed her uncertainty and longing to succeed in the tough, competitive entertainment business.
"Out Here on My Own" was written by sibling songwriting duo Lesley and Michael Gore. Lesley was best known for her hit songs "It's My Party," and "You Don't Own Me."

The song landed at No. 19 on the Billboard Hot 100 in November 1980 where it remained on the charts for almost four months.
However, the song still resonates with music and movie fans as a real turning point for Coco, when everything shifts, and her vulnerability comes through. For many viewers, the song transcended beyond the film to a moment in everyone's life where they experience doubt, resilience, and learning to stand alone.
'80s kids still remember how the song stayed with them, long after the credits rolled. Cara had a similar experience performing the now-iconic tune.
In a 2018 interview with Songwriter Universe, Cara said she related to the song. "I remember when (composer/songwriter) Michael Gore first played it to me. He wrote it with his sister, the late great Lesley Gore, who was a great vocalist from the ‘60s. And I thought it related to the character of Coco, but it really had a lot to do with Irene Cara as well."
"Out Here on My Own" was nominated for Best Original Song at the 53rd Academy Awards. While Michael Gore ultimately took home the Oscar that year for the film's title track, his collaboration with his sister Lesley made history when Fame became the first film to earn two nominations in the same category, securing its place in Academy Awards history.
Irene Cara died in November 2022 at 63.
