Goodreads' Most Anticipated Summer Books List Shows a Major Trend for Readers: Ann Patchett, Liane Moriarty, and More

Memorial Day 2026 is almost here, and the unofficial start of summer also means the official start of summer book season. There are few things that pair better with a sunny day and a comfortable lounge chair than a breezy beach read or a terrific thriller. Goodreads has just released its list of the most anticipated books of summer 2026. Good news, readers - general fiction is back. Let the summer reading begin.

Goodreads' Most Anticipated Books of Summer list includes 15 titles. The list is curated based on how many times a book is added to readers' want-to-read shelves. Ann Patchett'supcoming release Whistler made the cut. Early readers have called Whistler a book they "devoured," while another described the novel as "her best."

Readers are also eagerly awaiting Big Little Lies author Liane Moriarty's latest novel, Big Little Truths, scheduled for release on August 25, 2026.

The summer of 2026 features some of the publishing world's favorite authors, including Patchett and Moriarty, but this year's anticipated releases also reflect a larger shift in the literary world. Based on what Goodreads readers are most excited to read this summer, 2026 may become the summer of general fiction.

While the genre has recently taken a backseat to romantasy and fantasy, many of the most anticipated books of the summer reflect a renewed interest in character-driven storytelling, slower-paced narratives, and more reality-based fiction.

Why Readers Are Embracing General Fiction Again

Early readers of Whistler have praised the book's pacing and Patchett's "gift" for writing about families.

With the success of authors like Rebecca Yarros continuing to dominate romantasy bestseller lists, the genre is clearly here to stay. But if Goodreads' Most Anticipated Books of the Summer list is any indication, general fiction is making a major comeback - and readers are more than ready for it.
