1996 Hit Film, Ranked Among the ‘Greatest Love Stories of All Time,' Spawned Two of the Greatest Lines in Movie History

In 1996, Jerry Maguire was one of the top-grossing films of the year. Written and directed by Cameron Crowe, the Academy Award-winning film followed the complicated relationship between commitment-phobe sports agent Jerry Maguire (Tom Cruise) and single mom Dorothy Boyd (Renee Zellweger). The two fall for each other while trying to make a new business venture work with their only client, Rod Tidwell (Cuba Gooding Jr.).

Jerry Maguire was named one of the 100 greatest love stories by the American Film Institute (AFI). The organization also noted that the film was named among the great sports movies, with two of its most famous quotes featured among "the greatest lines of American cinema."

On the AFI website, Gooding's character's line "Show me the money" was named the 25th greatest movie quote of all time, while Zellweger's "You had me at ‘hello'" was No. 52.

‘You complete me'

Those weren't the only two quotable lines. Near the end of the film, desperate to get his wife back after she tells him she needs more than he's willing to give her, Cruise's Maguire shows up wearing his heart on his sleeve. After a spiel about how much he misses her, he tells Dorothy, "You complete me." That's when she shushes him and says, "You had me at hello."

Cruise actually begged Crowe to keep his "you complete me" line in the script. In a retrospective shared by Refinery 29, Crowe revealed that he got the line from the 1974 Joni Mitchell song, "Court and Spark." The screenwriter started to second-guess including the sentimental line in Jerry Maguire, but Cruise begged him to keep it in.

"I said, 'Cameron, please. I love this writing.' I said, 'Give me a shot, and if you don't like it then edit it [out]. But I at least want to act it [out]," Cruise recalled.

Thirty years later, fans still recite the famous Jerry Maguire catchphrases. Speaking with Today, Jerry O'Connell, who played football star Cush in the film, noted, "I think it's a real quotable movie. … movies today, they're not that quotable. You know what I'm saying?"

"I mean, like, how many quotes came out of Jerry Maguire?" the actor continued. "‘You had me at hello.' I can't tell you how many people yell ‘Show me the money' at me. People yell ‘My word is stronger than oak.' ‘I just want to play football' will be yelled at me all the time. And that's all Cameron Crowe, man. He wrote those words. Tell me a more quotable movie."
