Pokémon TCG: Mega Evolution-Pitch Black Expansion Announced, Featuring Mega Darkrai Ex And Mega Zeraora Ex
Mega Evolution is making its full return to the Pokémon Trading Card Game, and the headliner is one of the franchise's most visually striking Pokémon ever. The Pokémon Company International officially announced the Pokémon TCG: Mega Evolution-Pitch Black expansion on April 30, with a worldwide retail launch set for July 17, 2026. If you've been playing Pokémon Legends: Z-A's Mega Dimension DLC, you already know what's coming. Now it's getting a card.
The expansion pulls directly from the Mega Dimension storyline, translating its Mega Evolution forms into the TCG for the first time. That means Mega Darkrai ex leads the charge, and it's not coming alone.
Mega Darkrai ex, Mega Zeraora ex, and More Head the Pitch Black Set
Six Mega Evolution Pokémon ex are confirmed for the Pitch Black expansion, and the ones revealed so far are a strong lineup. Mega Darkrai ex anchors the set with commanding dark-type presence. Mega Zeraora ex brings electric aggression. Mega Chandelure ex and Mega Excadrill ex round out the confirmed quartet, with two additional Mega Evolution ex cards still to be revealed before launch.
The set also introduces Trainer-Black Bell, a new supporter card that can instantly confuse two of your opponent's Pokémon at once. That kind of board-wide disruption on a single card is the kind of thing that gets competitive players very interested very quickly. Other confirmed card inclusions are Inkay, Malamar, Zarude, Chi-Yu, and Shadow (Dark) Energy, nodding toward a heavy dark-type synergy throughout the set.
The full expansion clears 115 cards, giving collectors and players plenty to chase across booster packs, Elite Trainer Boxes, and additional collections still to be detailed closer to launch.
How to Get Your Hands on Pitch Black Before July 17
If you don't want to wait until retail day, Prerelease Tournaments through the Play! Pokémon program kick off on July 4, 2026 at participating independent retailers. You can use the event locator to find one near you.
If you play on Pokémon TCG Live, the digital version of the set lands a day earlier on July 16, so your prerelease grind and your digital collection can run parallel without any gaps.
Why This Set Matters More Than a Standard Expansion
Mega Evolution has had a complicated history in the TCG. The original Mega EX era from XY had a real identity problem, specifically the turn-skip mechanic when Mega Evolving, and it took years of hindsight for those cards to build a devoted collector following. The Pitch Black set has the benefit of launching alongside renewed mainstream interest in Mega Evolution through Pokémon Legends: Z-A, which sold impressively in its launch week and built a genuine community around its Mega Dimension storyline.
These aren't just nostalgia cards. They're tied to a game that a lot of people are still actively playing, and Mega Darkrai ex in particular is the kind of card that shows up in wallpapers, desktop setups, and lunchboxes before the pack is even out. The Pitch Black set has crossover appeal that extends well beyond competitive play.
Pokémon TCG: Mega Evolution-Pitch Black hits retailers on July 17, 2026. Mark your calendars, and book your local prerelease slot now before they fill up.
