Best-Selling Author's Classic Hit Ranked Among ‘Best Books' of All Time

Long before modern dark fantasy and CGI-generated dystopian films, The Stand by Stephen King set the gold standard for delivering terrifying brilliance and psychological horror.

Up to this day, the novel remains just as chilling as before.

The author cemented his status as one of the most prolific writers in history after releasing a series of notable epic horror novels, among which was the 1978 book The Stand.

Before hitting the small screen with the 1994 and 2020 miniseries, the post-apocalyptic novel had already gripped book lovers with its raw and unsettling portrayal of a collapsing society, as billions perished in a looming supernatural war.

Years before the global pandemic, King explored a similar scenario in his novel, which centers on a highly contagious strain of superflu called "Project Blue," also nicknamed "Captain Trips," that accidentally escapes from a secret military laboratory in California.

In The Stand, the author described this catastrophic event as the breakdown of society after the government couldn't control the situation, causing the deaths of billions due to the pandemic.

Decades after the novel was published, it continues to captivate readers and critics alike. Now, it is ranked among the "best books of all time" as cited by Goodreads, proving that the novel's legacy remains as disturbing and powerful as ever.

The rankings were based on votes from the Goodreads community and as a result, King's novel The Stand secured the No. 72 spot and received a 4.35 rating.

Some of the readers described it as "one of King's best books ever written," and others even called it "one of King's greatest works."

Apart from Goodreads, several publications have also praised The Stand for its impact and unforgettable storytelling. This includes Collider's "10 Best Epic Stephen King Books," where The Stand landed at number two.

The first was The Dark Tower, the eight-volume book series that delves into fantasy, Westerns, sci-fi and horror.

The same goes with Rolling Stone, as The Stand ranked first on its list of the "10 Best Stephen King Books," as voted by readers.
