2020 Best Sportscaster: Myck Miller
Myck Miller is a big a fan of the local sports scene, and the students, athletes and coaches have taken a liking to Miller in the year he’s been telling their stories for KEPR.
He credits that to the relationships he’s been able foster since he arrived in April 2019.
“Just being social with the kids, coaches and community,” Miller said of his appeal. “If you have that connection, things will take care of themselves. You have to show them you care about them, and make sure you give them the right coverage. Having that relationship is key.”
Miller, 26, began his broadcasting career by happenstance at BYU Hawaii.
He had gone to the college to play basketball, but a knee injury derailed his playing career his freshman year.
“I had to find something I wanted to do,” he said. “I like public speaking and writing. I started doing it at the university full time.”
He also gets pointers from his dad, Chris, who has been a sports broadcaster for 25 years. He currently works for NBC Sports in the Washington D.C. area.
“He has been supportive from the beginning,” Miller said. “He watches my broadcasts online or on Twitter and gives me advice. If I hadn’t gotten injured, I don’t know what I’d be doing.”
