Victim identified in Richland motel shooting. Mother of 3 faces charges

A 29-year-old Kennewick woman is in jail accused of murder in the death a man in a motel room in Richland.

The victim was identified Monday as Anthony M. Irvine, 24, of Burbank.

He was found shot to death in a room at the Days Inn on Jadwin Avenue about 10:15 a.m. Friday.

Joselyn Guzman, a mother of three with a history of drug addiction, was booked into the Benton County jail about 7 p.m. Saturday night.

Richland police released no other details by Monday morning about the Friday shooting and Guzman’s connection to Irvine, but they said the investigation is continuing.

Guzman is being held on suspicion of first-degree murder and on delivery of methamphetamine last July, jail booking records show.

She’s being held without bail on an investigative hold.

On Friday afternoon, Pasco and Richland police stopped a car and detained a man and woman for questioning in connection with Irvine’s death that morning.

It’s not clear if that woman was Guzman.

Earlier, a Kennewick officer had spotted a car believed connected with the shooting at Kennewick apartment complex. No one was found at the apartment but they discovered the car had been stolen from a nearby gas station the day before.

An autopsy for Irvine is scheduled Tuesday morning, said Benton County Coroner Bill Leach.

Criminal history

Guzman has a long history of drug problems, admitting three years ago during one criminal case that she is a drug addict and wanted help.

At the time her three daughters had been turned over to a relative to be cared for while she served a prison sentence and got drug treatment, court records show.

Guzman has twice been sentenced to prison, each time for just over one year.

Her convictions date to 2014 in Benton, Franklin and Cowlitz counties.

Prior crimes include burglaries, drug possession, introducing contraband into a detention facility, trafficking stolen property, false statements and criminal impersonation.

And she has two pending criminal cases in Benton County Superior Court. She was out of jail awaiting an August trial.

In addition to the drug charge in July 2019, she is accused of second-degree illegal gun possession and making a false statement to a public servant in July 2017.

An online records check also shows two dozen cases in Benton County District Court and Pasco Municipal Court.
