Local roundup: Angels go 1-1 in Gold bracket at 18U World Series
The Washington Angels 18 Gold-Benson softball team went 1-1 on Thursday to open double-elimination Gold bracket play at the Triple Crown Sports 18U World Series in Park City, Utah.
The Angels beat Bownet-Banister (Calif.) 7-1 behind a three-hitter by Othello’s Dominique Martinez, but then lost to Salt Lake Pegasus-White (Utah) 5-1.
JJ Hammond (Southridge) had four hits on the day, including a 3-for-3 performance against Pegasus. The Angels will play at 12:15 p.m. Friday against All American Fastpitch (Colo.).

Youth baseball
The Richland National Little League 12U All-Stars rolled to an 18-0, 3 1/2-inning win over Benton City in the District 12 Little League tournament at the Pasco National LL fields.
Elijah Rodriguez hit two home runs, including a grand slam, and tallied seven RBIs for Richland National. Joey Weissenfels (grand slam), Mason Howes and Deacon Boyce also homered for RNLL, which will face Pasco National at 6 p.m. Friday for the district title. Richland will be looking to force another game at noon Saturday at Pasco National.
Jacob Bilodeau, Kaden Bradshaw, Kenyon Coleman and Tyler Bilodeau combined to throw a three-hitter against Benton City. Conner McCloud had two of those hits.

Basketball
The Sagebrush Hoops-Black HS girls went 5-0 and won the title at the Midsummer Night’s Madness National Championships, a three-day tournament that ended Tuesday in Centralia.
Area players on the team are: Oumou Toure and Alexa Hazel of Kamiakin; Nicole Gall, Hailey Stevens and Gracie Pierce of Richland; Ellie Smith of Southridge; and Chiawana’s Kenedy Cartwright and Clare Eubanks.
Mike Hodgins and Keith Thompson coach Sagebrush Hoops-Black, which will play college viewing tournaments later this month in Las Vegas and San Diego.
