UPDATE: Head-on collision on I-82 sets semi, median ablaze
A head-on collision on Interstate 82 on Sunday evening set a truck and the median ablaze near the Columbia River crossing.
Witnesses told dispatchers that an eastbound Ford 150 pickup veered across the median and struck a westbound semi truck. The accident set the semi on fire and triggered a grass fire in the median.
The wreck occurred shortly before 5 p.m. in the westbound lanes of I-82 at milepost 127, about five miles west of the Washington-Oregon border.
A law enforcement officer arriving at the scene told dispatchers that he found a pickup with major front-end damage and the semi fully engulfed in flames. Dispatchers indicated that a motorist was injured, but no further details were available Sunday evening.
The dramatic wreck caused a major traffic backup at the end of the weekend, but one lane is open each direction as of 6:15 p.m., according to the Washington State Patrol.
The Washington State Patrol and local police fire fighting units, including a wildland strike team, responded to the scene.
