Never miss a local story.
Spent eight years in the Tigers’ organization, playing four seasons at Triple-A Toledo, and split time between Boston and Pittsburgh in 1997. The crafty left-hander won 52 games in the minors, and also played some independent professional baseball from 1997-1999 before trying his hand at coaching. A graduate of Colorado State, he managed the Rams club program to two National Club Baseball Association championships in 2004 and 2005 and then took over at Fort Collins High School, where he posted a 28-22-1 record over three seasons and led the Lambkins to the playoffs in 2012. He had never played or coached baseball in the Pacific Northwest before this season, but he’s watched his son Marco — a first-round pick by the St. Louis Cardinals this year — at Gonzaga University. He knows that wherever you play, however, the fundamentals of pitching don’t change. “You still have to throw it over the plate and get ahead,” he said.
