They don’t just play football at Richland; basketball team garners national attention

After beating one of the top 25-ranked teams in the nation last week, the Richland High boys basketball team was rewarded this week.

The Bombers came in at No. 21 in Week 3 of the USA Today Super 25 Expert Rankings.

It’s been a couple of big weeks at Richland, with the football team winning the Class 4A state football title Dec. 2.

Cole Northrop had 31 points in a 67-66 win over then-No. 15 Wasatch Academy (Mount Pleasant, Utah), in the title game of the Great Western Shootout in Orem, Utah. Wasatch Valley fell to No. 24 this week.

At the same tournament, Richland also posted a 71-47 win over highly touted Timpanogos, getting 17 points and 10 rebounds from senior Riley Sorn.

Memphis East (7-0) was ranked No. 1, with 9-0 Montverde Academy (Fla.) ranked No. 2.

The Bombers (5-0), who were ranked No. 12 on Wednesday in the first WIAA RPI rankings, will open Mid-Columbia Conference play Friday at Chiawana.
