Richland’s Underwood wins 4A district golf title

Richland’s Carl Underwood led from start to finish to pick up the Mid-Columbia Conference 4A district golf title Tuesday at Horn Rapids in West Richland.

Underwood, who led after Monday’s first round at Sun Willows with a 70, shot a 71 Tuesday for a 141 — four strokes better than Walla Walla’s Alex Johnson (145)

The Bombers, who won the team title with 105 points, earned four of the five state berths. Evan Hattori (146), Shane Amidan (151) and Rhett Levin (151) will join Underwood at the state tournament next week, while Nick Yamauchi is the first alternate.

The 4A state tournament is Tuesday and Wednesday at Meadow Springs in Richland.

Jalayne Martinez of Pasco shot a 140 over two rounds to win the 4A girls district title by 12 strokes over runner-up Macy Robertson (152) of Richland.

The Bombers, who will send three to state, won the team title. State will be held Tuesday and Wednesday at Sun Willows.

In the 3A division, Kamiakin’s Bolton Dauenhauer shot a 76 during the second round at Horn Rapids to win the district title with a 150, two strokes better than teammate McGwire Hanson (152).

The Braves, which ran away with the team title, and Hanford each qualified two for state, with Southridge’s Riley White (157) earning a berth.

Hanford’s Gabe Cach (156) and Max LaViolette (158) also are headed to state, which will be played Tuesday and Wednesday at Creek at Qualchan in Spokane.

Kamiakin’s Alexa Clark shot a second-round 76 for a two-day total of 152 to rally past Southridge’s Therese Warner for the 3A girls district title at Sun Willows Golf Course.

Warner, who shot a 75 during the first round, finished a 78 Tuesday for a 153 and second place.

Kamiakin, which won the team title, will send three to state, as will Southridge.

Suns senior Meredith Hibbard, who was fifth with a 166, will make her first trip to state, which will be Tuesday and Wednesday at Indian Canyon in Spokane.

2A BOYS DISTRICT 5-6: East Valley’s Ryler Torres won the second hold of a playoff with Wapato’s Hunter Jacob to win medalist honors Monday with a 75 at Lakeview Golf Course in Soap Lake.

Ephrata won the team title with 337 points, while Prosser was fourth with 366, but did not qualify anyone to state.

Othello finished eighth in the team standings (427) and will send Ben Garza — who shot an 87 — to next week’s state tournament at Horn Rapids in West Richland.

Softball

RICHLAND 3, MEAD 1: Stephanie Merwin drove in all three runs for the Bombers (19-4-1) in a Class 4A regional loser-out game against the Panthers (16-7) at Columbia Playfield.

Richland will face Central Valley (15-7), the Greater Spokane League’s No. 1 seed, at 2 p.m. Saturday at University High School in Spokane Valley. The winner will face Walla Walla (21-2) or University (17-4) at 4 p.m. for the regional title.

Merwin had a run-scoring sacrifice fly in the third inning and a two-run single in the fifth.

Paige Liikala went 2-for-3 with a double for Richland, while Brandi Andrews struck out four and didn’t allow an earned run in seven innings.

Prep baseball

The Stanfield Tigers, ranked No. 3 in the Oregon 3A baseball poll, will host the Eastern Oregon League district tournament Friday.

The host Tigers (24-2), who won the regular-season title, will play in the championship game at 3:30 p.m.

Admission is $6 for adults and $4 for students.

Tennis

4A GIRL DISTRICT: Pasco junior Eden Snider won her third consecutive Mid-Columbia Conference 4A district title with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Walla Walla’s Kyndal Locati at Pasco High School.

Snider did not lose a game en route to the title.

The Bulldogs also won their third consecutive district title, edging Richland by two points.

“It’s a pleasant surprise,” Pasco coach Charlie Villanueva said of the title. “Except for Eden, I have a whole brand new group and we were able to repeat again.”

Richland’s Quinci Fisher and Chelsea Li won the doubles title, beating Chiawana’s Darbi Pink and Cassandra Muniz 6-2, 6-2.

The top two singles players and doubles teams advance to regionals Friday and Saturday at Lewis & Clark High School in Spokane.

3A GIRLS DISTRICT: Kennewick sophomore Maggie Fiocchi won her second consecutive MCC 3A district title, beating Hanford’s An Wang 6-0, 6-0 at Southridge High School.

In doubles, Hanford’s Christina Xantheas and Emily Tan topped Southridge’s Grace Hamaker-Teals and Devyn Wolfe, 6-2, 6-4.

Hanford won the team title.

Regionals are Saturday at Mt. Spokane High School. The top two singles players and doubles teams will advance to the state tournament in Kennewick.

CONNELL 5, CHELAN 2: Adrian Mendiola scored two goals and Jose Fraga handed out three assists as the Eagles advanced to the Elite 8 with a home victory over the Goats in 1A state play.

Connell (19-0) will host the winner of Wednesday’s LaCenter-Colville game Saturday. Game time has yet to be determined.
