Wa-Hi’s Jones wins state swimming title

Walla Walla’s Tyler Jones was the lone Mid-Columbia champion Saturday in the state boys swimming championships in Federal Way.

Jones, a senior, swam to the Class 4A 500 meters freestyle title.

He didn’t take the lead for good until the halfway point, when he overtook Eastlake’s Jackson Berman.

Richland’s Jeffery Kern, a sophomore, finished fourth in 4:45.06.

Jones placed fourth in the 200 freestyle, while Kern finished sixth.

The Richland 200 medley relay team — consisting of Cole Westendorf, Ryan Shiplet, Charles Fillebrown and Scott Francis — placed sixth.
