Vancouver's Spencer Tibbits rallies to make cut at U.S. Open

Much like his U.S. Open final qualifying, Vancouver's Spencer Tibbits had to come back the next morning at Shinnecock Hills to finish his round.

Unlike his U.S. Open qualifying attempt, Tibbits knows he'll be playing in the U.S. Open on the weekend.

The Fort Vancouver High grad and former Oregon State standout finished the last six holes of the first round Friday morning with a spectacular 2-under-par 68 to put him in a tie for fifth. Thursday's round was suspended because of darkness due to a late start because of fog.

Tibbits made three birdies over the last five holes of the second round to rally for a 4-over 74 and a 2-over total to make the cut for the first time in a major as a professional.

The top 60 and ties made the weekend cut. Tibbits finished tied for 34th after two rounds, nine shots behind leader Wyndham Clark's 7-under total.

Tibbits played the 2019 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach as an amateur, missing the cut by one shot. It had been his only PGA Tour start until he teed off Thursday in Southampton, N.Y.

He missed the automatic berth out of the qualifier in Creswell, Ore., in what became a nine-hole playoff with Andrew Putman. That playoff was suspended by darkness after six playoff holes and the last three were played the following day with Putnam winning and Tibbits receiving the first alternate.

On Monday, Tibbits was added to the U.S. Open field as one of the five first alternates from qualifying around the country.

Tibbits had three birdies and one bogey in the first round, but had a rough first nine holes of the second round with two bogeys and a double bogey. He would bogey holes 11, 12 and 13 before bringing some if it back.

Tibbits birdied three of the last five holes including making a long birdie putt on 18 for his 74.

The third round for Tibbits begins at 9:06 a.m. (Pacific) Saturday. He's paired with Adrien Dumont de Chassart of Belgium.
