Cowboys RB2 Job is One to Watch

The Dallas Cowboys have running back Javonte Williams firmly cemented as the starter, but the team needs an answer for the second running back spot in July.

Williams rushed for 1,201 yards and 11 touchdowns on 252 carries, and that last number behooves the Cowboys to pick the right back in the competition for No. 2 in the backfield. Carrying the ball more than 200 times per season isn't sustainable for the running back in the current NFL.

It's a recipe for burnout and injuries. Dallas' high-powered offense can ill afford with Williams since the running game perfectly complements the passing attack at the moment.

The Cowboys have Malik Davis, Jaydon Blue and Phil Mafah to consider for the role. Davis rushed for 250 yards and two touchdowns on 52 carries, and he made up for Williams' absence amid injury last season.

That said, Blue and Mafah have something to offer as they both enter their second season in the league. Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer notably rested Williams and gave opportunities to Blue and Mafah on Wednesday in mandatory minicamp.

Schottenheimer confirmed with reporters, via the Dallas News' Joseph Hoyt, that he intended to give Blue and Mafah more reps. Blue's ability in particular includes his pass catching skills, which he displayed at Texas with 503 yards and seven touchdowns. Mafah is a tough runner and does well in both short-yardage situations and pass protection.

Whether or not those backs will surpass Davis for the second running back spot is another question. Davis firmly held that job in 2025, and he could make the case in training camp and the preseason all over again.

His inside running ability is strong, but he hasn't been a big pass catcher in his young career. Davis will want to improve that come July to avoid Blue or Mafah possibly grabbing the second running back job.
