Tigers Make Gleyber Torres Announcement Before Astros Game
The Detroit Tigers have not only been ringless since 1984, but they also didn't make the playoffs from 2015 to 2023. They finally turned things around in 2024 and 2025, but 2026 is looking like another lost year so far.
The Tigers are 30-43 entering Wednesday's game against the Houston Astros, and it's partially because second baseman Gleyber Torres has only played 43 games. The native Venezuelan is one of their most reliable hitters, as he's slashing .280/.395/.395 with four homers and 18 RBIs.
Detroit announced via social media on Wednesday that Torres won't be back immediately.
"The Tigers today activated RHP Casey Mize off the 15-day injured list and placed INF Gleyber Torres on the 10-day injured list (retro to June 16) with a left oblique strain," Tigers PR stated.

Tigers Need Gleyber Torres to Turn Season Around
Torres was one of the main reasons why Detroit made its second straight American League Division Series appearance last year, as he earned his third career All-Star nod and logged a .745 OPS with 16 homers and 74 RBIs over 145 regular-season games. The 5-foot-10, 205-pounder led the team with a .358 OBP and was second among position players with a 2.9 WAR. The Tigers won a tiebreaker with the Astros for the final AL wild card spot at 87-75.
This year, Torres' season has been thrown off by injury. The former New York Yankee was out from May 4 to June 2 with a left oblique strain and is now on the shelf again for the same issue. He left Monday's 9-3 win over Houston after hurting the oblique during a swing in the second inning, per MLB.com.
The Tigers can't afford for Torres to be out too much longer, as they're tied for 19th in baseball with a .709 team OPS and are six games out of a wild card spot. They're also nine games behind the Chicago White Sox for first place in the AL Central.
Torres signed a one-year, $15 million deal with Detroit in December 2024 after seven seasons in New York. The veteran then signed a one-year, $22.05 million qualifying offer this past November.
Meanwhile, Mize is 2-3 with a 2.27 ERA over nine starts this season. The right-hander hasn't pitched since May 27, but he'll start on Wednesday against Houston right-hander Peter Lambert (5-4, 3.47 ERA). The first pitch is scheduled for 2:10 p.m. ET at the Astros' Daikin Park.
