Lionel Messi Sends Message Ahead of Algeria World Cup Clash

The 2026 FIFA World Cup has already been underway for several days, but for Argentina fans, the tournament truly begins on Tuesday when Lionel Messi and the defending champions open their campaign against Algeria at Kansas City Stadium.

Messi entered the World Cup dealing with a minor hamstring issue that sidelined him for Argentina's first of two friendlies against Honduras. However, he looked sharp during the limited portions of training sessions that were open to reporters and eventually put any lingering concerns to rest in last week's 3-0 victory over Iceland at Jordan-Hare Stadium in Auburn.

Messi entered the match in the second half and immediately made his presence felt with a brilliant pass on his first touch. Moments later, he converted a penalty and played the final 20 minutes with apparent ease.

Argentina has since cleared Messi to start against Algeria, a match that will mark his 200th appearance for the national team and extend his record as Argentina's most-capped player. Ahead of the game, the 38-year-old shared a simple message on his Instagram Story alongside a photo of the team huddle.

"Juntos," he wrote, meaning "Together."

Messi is appearing in his sixth, and most likely final, World Cup. With the burden of expectations and years of heartbreaking defeats now behind him, fans have noticed a happier and more relaxed version of the Argentine captain as he seeks to join Brazilian legend Pelé as a repeat World Cup champion.

Only two nations have successfully defended a World Cup title, with Italy accomplishing the feat in the 1930s and Brazil doing so in 1962 despite Pelé suffering an injury during the group stage. Argentina remains heavily reliant on its superstar, but as the team demonstrated in 2022, and as Messi's latest message emphasized, unity remains at the heart of its success.

"What happened back in Qatar was just amazing. The whole country united," Messi's longtime national teammate, Nicolas Otamendi, told Associated Press. "We have that engraved in our minds, and it's just injected us with the strength to keep trying. There's no relaxing. We need to keep working with that level of humility that is required in these types of competitions."

Messi and Argentina endured multiple heartbreaks in the Copa América before finally ending their drought with victory in 2021. They successfully defended the title in 2024, and if that trend repeats itself in 2026, it would provide a fitting fairy-tale ending to what would be the greatest career in soccer history.
