Mariners rookie Colt Emerson out of lineup again with back spasms | Notebook

BALTIMORE - For the second day in a row, Colt Emerson was out of the Mariners lineup Tuesday, and he spent much of the afternoon getting treatment on his ailing back.

Manager Dan Wilson again struck an overly optimistic tone when discussing the status of his 20-year-old rookie shortstop, but Emerson did not take part in any on-field work pregame at Camden Yards and did not appear ready to play in Tuesday night's game.

With J.P. Crawford (hand) landing on the 10-day injured list Monday, Cole Young was in the lineup for his second major-league start at shortstop for Tuesday's game against the Orioles, with Ryan Bliss starting at second base for the second night in a row.

Bliss would be the backup shortstop if something were to happen to Young.

Crawford said Tuesday he had a follow-up CT scan on his right hand but was awaiting results from the team's medical staff. The swelling in his hand has subsided some, but Crawford has been unable to grip a bat yet.

Emerson has not had any medical imaging taken on his back, Wilson said.

Emerson cut his infield drills short Monday afternoon after appearing to tweak his back on a play near second base. He was scratched from Monday's lineup with what Wilson later described as back spasms.

"He's still day-to-day right now," Wilson said Tuesday afternoon. "(He) seems to be better today than he was yesterday. So that's a really positive thing."

Veteran utility player Miles Mastrobuoni arrived in Baltimore on Tuesday as part of the team's taxi squad. Mastrobuoni remains on the 60-day injured list after suffering a calf strain this spring.

If Emerson does need to be placed on the injured list, it appears Mastrobuoni would be the corresponding move.

Mastrobuoni shared third base duties with veteran Patrick Wisdom during pregame infield work.

"It's the middle of a long road trip and we've got couple guys banged up," Wilson said. "So we'll just see how it goes. We brought a couple guys in (on the taxi squad, along with right-hander Nick Davila) just as a precautionary for now."

Criswell lands on IL; Davila recalled

Just as the M's bullpen was starting to get back to full strength, another injury has crept up for one of the Mariners' key arms.

Right-hander Cooper Criswell was placed on the 15-day injured list with a right shoulder strain Tuesday afternoon, less than an hour before first pitch against the Orioles.

In his first year in Seattle, Criswell, 29, has had a productive start to the season while serving in various roles. In 26 appearances, he has a 3.52 ERA with eight walks, 23 strikeouts and one save in 30.2 innings.

Davila, a 27-year-old right-hander, was recalled from Tacoma to take Criswell's place.

Davila (DAH-vee-LAH) was optioned to Tacoma on May 25. He made seven relief appearances with the Mariners after being selected from Double-A Arkansas on May 2, throwing 7.1 innings and allowing three hits and six walks with four strikeouts.
