Alterra Decides To "Part Ways" With Steamboat Ski Resort President

Steamboat Ski Resort, Colorado, announced this week that its owner, Alterra Mountain Company, had decided to "part ways" with the resort's president and COO, Dave Hunter.

In a news release covered by the Steamboat Pilot, the resort said that the search for a new leader would begin immediately. Steamboat Ski Resort didn't share more information with the local outlet about the decision to part ways with Hunter.

In the meantime, the executive vice president of Alterra's Rockies Division, Rob Perlman, will lead daily operations at Steamboat Ski Resort. Before taking his current role, Perlman served as the president of Steamboat Ski Resort for nine years.

Hunter became president and COO of Steamboat Ski Resort in 2024, succeeding Perlman. He has more than three decades of experience in the ski industry. He arrived in Colorado in 1997 and worked for 15 years at Eldora Mountain Resort, including serving as director of operations.

Ahead of becoming Steamboat Ski Resort's president and COO, Hunter was the resort's vice president of mountain operations.

During his tenure in that role, Steamboat installed the longest, fastest 10-person gondola in North America, introduced an on-hill dedicated beginners area, and added 655 acres of advanced and expert terrain, according to a news release from 2024.

The departure of Hunter follows the news in March that Alterra's CEO, Jared Smith, would be stepping down at the end of the ski season. Weeks later, the company also announced that Crystal Mountain, Washington, had a new president and COO, Linnea Hansen.

Alongside Crystal Mountain and Steamboat, Alterra owns several ski resorts across North America, including Palisades Tahoe, Mammoth Mountain, and Deer Valley. The company, however, may be best known for the Ikon Pass, one of North America's leading mega-passes.
