Jannik Sinner Gets Apology From Opponent After French Open Elimination

Juan Manuel Cerundolo found himself apologizing to the No. 1 player in the world after his shocking upset of Jannik Sinner in the second round of the French Open.

Cerundolo faced a massive hole near the end of the third set when he trailed 1-5 after dropping the first two sets 3-6, 2-6. That’s when his 24-year-old opponent started to physically struggle before eventually taking a medical timeout in the third set.

Cerundolo took advantage of the ailing Sinner and eventually won the match 3-6, 2-6, 7-5, 6-1, 6-1.

The 56th-ranked player surprisingly apologized to Sinner after the match.

“I feel sorry for him because he deserved to win a lot of matches, and of course he was deserving to win this match, but then I don’t know what happened,” Cerundolo said in his on-court interview.

Sinner admitted he wasn’t feeling well even before the match began, but started off the match strong.

“Woke up this morning, didn’t feel very well and tried to keep the points very short,” Sinner said. “Also in the beginning I was hitting very clean, very good, and then I just kind of hit the wall, and that’s it.”

Cerundolo will now face Spain’s Martin Landaluce in the third round.
