Spurs Would Be Wise to Complement Victor Wembanyama With NBA Hopeful

The San Antonio Spurs are in the heat of the NBA playoffs as they take on the Oklahoma City Thunder. The team hit the jackpot with big man Victor Wembanyama, but they’ll need to add more rookie talent to their roster to support Wembanyama.

That’s where the NBA draft comes in. Even though the Spurs are focused on the playoffs, they’re also paying attention to the hopefuls in this year’s draft class.

On Wednesday, May 20, Isaac Trotter of CBS Sports released his latest mock, naming his picks after the NBA Combine. “Beyond the measurements and testing, the conversations behind the scenes provide an illuminating look at where some of the top NBA Draft prospects are trending,” he states in the piece.

For the Spurs, he links them to power forward Karim Lopez.

“San Antonio has its bookends in place with jaw-dropping big man Victor Wembanyama and breakout rookie Dylan Harper, so it’s all about finding complementary pieces to fill in the gaps,” he states in the piece.

My Analysis: Is Karim Lopez a Fit for the Spurs?

Lopez is a strong 6-foot-8 wing who has spent time playing both forward spots for the New Zealand Breakers. His shooting and defense still need work, but there is enough versatility and physicality there to make him an interesting option at No. 20, especially if other wing prospects are already gone. He’d be a great fit for the Spurs, and there’s really no downside to them picking him.
