Cubs Make Edward Cabrera Announcement After Removal From Brewers Game

The Chicago Cubs cannot afford to lose another starting pitcher to injury this season.

They're already without starters Cade Horton (Tommy John surgery), Matthew Boyd (torn meniscus) and Justin Steele (Rehabbing Tommy John, suffered a setback and was shut down).

On Wednesday, right-handed starting pitcher Edward Cabrera left his start against the Milwaukee Brewers after just three innings of work and 61 pitches. He gave up four runs (one-earned run) on four hits while striking out two and walking two.

The Cubs later announced that Cabrera is dealing with a blister on his right middle finger. That would explain why Cabrera's velocity was down in the fourth inning when he got pulled from the game after just one pitch in the frame.

Depending on the severity, a blister can require an IL stint for a pitcher sometimes. However, the Cubs have seemingly dodged a bullet that it's not something more serious given it's not a shoulder or arm injury.

Chicago will hope that Cabrera can make his next scheduled start on Tuesday against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The Cubs' starting rotation currently features: Cabrera, Shota Imanaga, Jameson Taillon, Colin Rea and Ben Brown.

The Cubs acquired Cabrera from the Miami Marlins in the offseason in exchange for top prospect outfielder Owen Caissie, infielder Cristian Hernandez and corner infielder/outfielder Edgardo De Leon.

So far, Cabrera has gone 3-1 with a 4.00 ERA, 1.35 WHIP, 47 strikeouts, 10 starts and 54 innings this season with Chicago. The Cubs will need a little more out of the 28-year-old if they're going to overcome the slew of starting pitching injuries they have this year.

The Cubs are on the verge of being swept by the National League Central division rival Brewers across a three-game series as they trail 5-0 tonight in the ninth inning.

On the season, the Cubs entered the night at 29-20 and a half game behind Milwaukee in the central. Barring a Chicago comeback they will be 1.5 games behind the Brewers in the division if the score holds up. It would be their fifth loss in a low and ninth defeat in their last 11 games.
