Tigers' A.J Hinch Shares Gleyber Torres Update Before Blue Jays Game

Plagued by injuries and inconsistency, the Detroit Tigers are off to a disappointing start to the 2026 MLB season. The club that was one win away from the ALCS just last year now finds itself 19-25 and tied for last place in the American League Central division with the Kansas City Royals.

Injuries have derailed the early portion of the season for Detroit, with All-Star pitchers such as Tarik Skubal and Justin Verlander as well as veteran infielder Gleyber Torres each missing time. Despite the flurry of injuries for the Tigers and an overall disappointing record, the AL Central remains firmly within striking distance. The division-leading Cleveland Guardians are only 4.5 games ahead of Detroit, making the recovery of their key contributors an encouraging sign for Tigers fans.

29-year-old three-time All-Star infielder Gleyber Torres has been sidelined since May 2 with an oblique strain. The Tigers received an optimistic update regarding Torres' recovery process on Friday. Tigers reporter Jason Beck shared on X that manager A.J. Hinch stated that Torres is gearing up for a rehab assignment.

"Gleyber Torres is trending towards a rehab assignment soon, according to A.J. Hinch. Currently running and throwing along with batting practice," Beck shared on X.

While the Tigers organization has not announced an official timetable for his return, this update signals a major step in the recovery process for Torres.

Prior to the injury, Torres was batting .259 with an OPS of .716. However, in the last 17 games before his injury, Torres had seen significant improvement, hitting .300 with an OPS of .793, both above his career averages. As the Tigers look to gain ground on the Guardians in the AL Central, the return of a veteran bat like Torres could provide an important boost to Detroit's lineup.

The Tigers will look to end their three-game losing streak on Friday as they begin a three-game home series against the Toronto Blue Jays.
