Carlo Ancelotti Makes ‘Preliminary' Decision on Neymar Before 2026 World Cup
As Brazil prepares for the 2026 World Cup in pursuit of a sixth title, uncertainty still surrounds the status of star forward Neymar. At one stage, the Santos FC attacker appeared far from contention, but new Brazil manager Carlo Ancelotti seems to be keeping the door open.
Neymar has not featured for Brazil since October 2023, when he suffered a torn ACL. Persistent injuries since then led many to believe he would miss out on the World Cup squad entirely, especially after Ancelotti emphasized that only players 100% would be selected.
However, the 34-year-old has avoided any major setbacks in recent months and appears to be regaining form at the ideal time as Brazil announces its 55-man preliminary squad for next month's World Cup.
Fabrizio Romano confirmed on Monday on X that Neymar made the preliminary list, with a final decision on his inclusion in the 26-man squad expected next week.

That marks a significant boost for Neymar, who was left out of Brazil's March international window. Forwards Endrick, Gabriel Martinelli, Matheus Cunha, Raphinha, Vinícius Júnior, and João Pedro were all selected ahead of him at the time, with Neymar admitting he was disappointed by the omission.
However, Neymar has responded impressively, recording 11 goals and 4 assists across his last 17 matches. His sharpness, fitness, and efficiency have steadily improved over recent weeks, developments that Ancelotti is undoubtedly monitoring closely.
"He's currently being evaluated by the CBF and by me, and he still has two months to show he has the qualities to play in the next World Cup," Ancelotti told L'Équipe last month.
"I'm going to call up players who are physically ready," he added. "After his knee injury, Neymar has come back well-he's scoring goals. He needs to continue like this and improve his fitness. He's on the right track."
Neymar appears to have followed that path. If fitness is no longer a concern, the veteran forward could very well earn a place at what may be his final World Cup, potentially sharing the stage once again with legends like Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
Despite an injury-plagued career, Neymar remains Brazil's all-time leading scorer with 79 international goals and is widely regarded as one of the most gifted players the nation has ever produced. Now, he will hope his luck and body cooperate long enough for one more shot on football's biggest stage.
