WWE Backlash 2026 Results: How Roman Reigns vs. Jacob Fatu Ended
Roman Reigns is still the World Heavyweight Champion, but his war with Jacob Fatu is far from over.
Reigns survived Fatu at WWE Backlash 2026 in Tampa, escaping with his championship intact after a chaotic main event. But the real story came after the bell, when Fatu snapped and launched a vicious post-match assault on Reigns, locking in the Tongan Death Grip as officials struggled to pull him away.
By the end of the night, Reigns left Tampa with the championship-but Jacob Fatu left with the momentum.

WWE Backlash 2026 Grade: B
Backlash delivered exactly what we expected: a clean post-WrestleMania reset show with strong in-ring action, storyline progression, and one major headline.
The main criticism is volume.
With an earlier start time and only five matches, the card felt light for a Premium Live Event. The crowd in Tampa felt that by the end of the night. The wrestling was strong. The show just could have used one or two more meaningful matches to feel complete.
What Was John Cena's Announcement at WWE Backlash 2026?
The biggest non-match moments of the night belonged to John Cena.
Cena officially announced a new WWE Premium Live Event called the John Cena Classic, along with a brand-new championship bearing his name.

Unlike traditional WWE tournaments, Cena revealed that the inaugural champion will be determined by fan voting-a major format shift that immediately makes the event one of WWE's most unique upcoming attractions.
WWE has not yet announced a date, tournament structure, or championship design.
Those details are expected in the coming weeks.
Did Asuka Retire at WWE Backlash?
WWE has not confirmed whether Asuka retired at WWE Backlash, but her post-match interaction with Iyo Sky certainly signaled a career shift-if not the end of her WWE run.

The moment was acknowledged on WWE's post-show coverage amid fan speculation.
At 44 years old, Asuka is the oldest active female wrestler on WWE's roster and has competed at a high level far longer than most women in the division. Whether this was a retirement tease or simply a moment of respect remains to be seen.
When Is WWE's Next Premium Live Event?
WWE returns to the road quickly.
Two weeks after Backlash, WWE heads to Fort Wayne for Saturday Night's Main Event on May 23. While not officially considered a Premium Live Event, SNME is positioned as WWE's next major televised special.
The next official PLE will be Clash in Italy, taking place the following weekend overseas.
WWE has already announced one major match for that card: Cody Rhodes vs. Gunther for the Undisputed WWE Championship.
After the way Backlash ended, Roman Reigns vs. Jacob Fatu II feels inevitable.
