The W.F. West boys soccer team had to travel south for its pigtail match against Hudson's Bay on Thursday night, but the Bearcats were able to come away with a 2-1 victory to eliminate the Eagles and advance in the district tournament.

"The guys did a great job possessing and controlling play for most of the game," W.F. West coach Allen Anderson said.

The Bearcats pushed early for the opening goal, and they got it when a corner kick from Alex Mathumiza deflected off a Hudson's Bay defender and into the net.

The 1-0 scoreline held until the 61st minute, when Gage Grisham played a through ball to Mathuzima, who slotted a shot past the Hudson's Bay keeper and inside the far post to double the advantage.

"Alex was a standout playing back at striker again," Anderson said.

The Eagles got on the board with a free kick in the 73rd minute, but never found the equalizer. By the end of the night, W.F. West had outshot Hudson's Bay 16-6.

"The guys did well to finish strong," Anderson said.

In addition to commending Mathuzima, Anderson also gave praise to Isaac Alderson and Julian Casimiro, who Anderson said commanded the midfield well throughout the game.

W.F. West (11-6-1) is now through to the quarterfinals and the double-elimination portion of the 2A District 4 Tournament.

The Bearcats will face Columbia River, the GHSL's No. 1 seed, in the quarterfinal in Vancouver on Saturday. It's a rematch from last year's district title game, won by the Rapids 3-0.
