Yankees' Aaron Boone Reacts to Red Sox Firing Manager Alex Cora

After beginning the season 10-17, the Boston Red Sox made the shocking decision to fire manager Alex Cora, who was in the early stages of his eighth season with the organization.

Cora was in the second year of a three-year extension, and unless he accepts another managerial role elsewhere in the league, Boston will remain responsible for the remainder of his contract, valued at roughly another year and a half of salary.

The move has already drawn reactions across the league, including from AL East rival and New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone.

"So, yeah, I was in my office in Houston… a couple of our coaches had heard that something was going down in Boston and then guys started checking their phones and yeah Cora and several of the coaches might be out. So it was trickling in right as we were going out. And then someone alerted me in the middle of the game that Alex got fired and five or six coaches," Boone said during his weekly appearance on “Talkin' Yankees.” "It was stunning, really. So that's how I found out.

I think he's one of the best managers in the sport, so I think it was stunning to all of us."

The Yankees had just completed a sweep of the Red Sox last week, which ultimately marked the final stretch of games Cora managed at Fenway Park.

The club then went on a road trip to begin the weekend and, after securing a 17-1 win on Saturday - their largest margin of victory this season - the organization still decided it was not enough to retain him.

Beyond Cora, the team also parted ways with five members of his coaching staff. While former catcher Jason Varitek was offered a reassigned role within the organization, he ultimately declined, effectively becoming the sixth departure from Cora's staff.

Cora was already offered the managerial job with the Philadelphia Phillies who fired Rob Thomson on Tuesday, but did not accept the offer as he wants to spend time with his family.
