MLB Fans React to Phillies' Decision to Fire Rob Thomson

The Philadelphia Phillies made a major move on April 28, 2026, firing manager Rob Thomson after a poor start to the season.

The decision came despite Thomson leading the team to four straight postseason appearances. MLB confirmed the news on X, adding that Don Mattingly will take over as interim manager for the rest of 2026.

Philadelphia's 9–19 record proved costly. The team had lost 11 of its last 12 games and struggled throughout April. They were also tied for the worst record in Major League Baseball at the time. A recent 10-game losing streak added pressure on the front office to act.

Soon, fans reacted online, with many questioning the decision.

One fan called, "Dumb. This may backfire and hurt the team much more. Kevin Long should have been the one fired."

Another user argued, "He didn't deserve that. The team simply isn't performing."

"Tough exit for Thomson after those playoff runs, but a nine and nineteen start is impossible to ignore," A user wrote.

A fan questioned, "Who's gonna lead the clown show now? ."

One fan mentioned, "It was a good run while it lasted. Time to focus on every other Philly sport. Since the Phillies decided they wanted to be irrelevant the next decade."

"Dave Dombrowski should be next! He put together this aging roster. Wonder if he's still content?" A fan wrote.

Phillies' recent loss came in a 6-2 decision to the Atlanta Braves. In that game, Chris Sale dominated with six shutout innings. Matt Olson and Eli White powered Atlanta's offense early. Philadelphia struggled again, highlighting ongoing issues.

Despite the slump, Thomson leaves with a .568 winning percentage, the best in franchise modern history. His dismissal also came months after signing an extension through 2027, adding to the surprise.

Mattingly now faces the challenge of turning the season around. He steps into a difficult situation, with expectations still high in Philadelphia.
