Alexi Lalas Defends USMNT Fans: 'Criticism Is Our Divine Right'
The 2026 World Cup has brought a lot of pressure to the USMNT as they are one of the host nations. The USMNT's preparation for the World Cup has been questionable among the fanbase.
In the previous two friendly matches, the USMNT suffered losses to Belgium and Portugal last month.
The USMNT will be playing against Senegal and Germany before the start of the World Cup. While the opponents ahead of the World Cup have been very competitive, the majority of the USMNT fanbase questions the level of their team.
On the Alexi Lalas' State of the Union Podcast, former USMNT player Alexi Lalas discusses the USMNT fan base being negatively labeled ahead of the World Cup this summer. Lalas does not see any issue regarding fans discussing their displeasure with the team.
Alexi Lalas on the USMNT Fanbase Labeled 'Negative'
Ahead of the World Cup, the USMNT fanbase could be considered split in regard to how they believe the team will perform this summer under head coach Mauricio Pochettino.
Based on the CONCACAF Nations League, the Gold Cup, and the friendly matches, Pochettino's team has not given many fans full confidence to perform well at the World Cup.
Lalas believes that fans have the right to criticize the players as they demand better performances.
When talking about the negativity among the USMNT fanbase, Lalas said, "I think we all recognize that all fanbases in sports often are negative or pessimistic. I actually think in sports it's kind of our divine right to do so... I think sports encourages us to be irrationally emotional and passionate, and I hope that doesn't go away."
He continued and said, "Sports give us that license to act and do things that we won't do in real life. There's certainly a threshold you do not want to cross. But there is also a time and place for positivity. And I think we are certainly heading towards one of those times and places."
