San Diego Padres Reportedly Selling For MLB-Record Price
The San Diego Padres are second only to the back-to-back defending champion Los Angeles Dodgers in the overall MLB standings.
If the team’s sale goes through, the Padres will be second to none.
The Wall Street Journal’s Jared Diamond and Miriam Gottfried reported on Friday that the Padres “are nearing a deal to be sold to private-equity billionaire José E. Feliciano and his wife, Kwanza Jones, for approximately $3.9 billion.
Todd Boehly and Feliciano’s Clearlake Capital Group acquired Chelsea F.C. of the English Premier League for $5.3 billion in May 2022.
The Padres’ $3.9 billion valuation is the highest of any MLB franchise in history.
Steve Cohen currently holds that record, as he completed his $2.4 billion purchase of the New York Mets in November 2020.
ESPN’s Aiden Gonzalez also reported the news, noting that the sale cannot be finalized until 75% of MLB owners approve it.
MLB owners unanimously approved John Seidler as the Padres’ controlling owner in February 2025. Seidler took over for his brother, Peter, who died at 63 in November 2023.
On the field, the Padres are riding an eight-game winning streak and have won 12 of 14 games in April. San Diego’s 13-6 record is behind only the Dodgers’ 14-4 record.
At this point, however, all that matters is how San Diego plays in September and October, given that the Padres invested heavily in finally winning the franchise’s first World Series championship.
The Padres signed Manny Machado to what was the richest free-agent contract in American sports history at the time in February 2019. San Diego extended Fernando Tatis Jr. on a 14-year, $340 million contract in February 2021. Xander Bogaerts cashed in on an 11-year, $280 million contract in December 2022.
