Letter: Pasco port districts not balanced

There are strict laws against “gerrymandering” voting districts. Each district is supposed to have an equal population and the lines can not disadvantage any race or ethnic group from participating in the political process.

The city of Pasco found this out the hard way. The Pasco Port District used to be fair and balanced, now it is far from that.

Port District #1, which is north and east of Pasco, has only about 100 inhabitants, if you count the jackrabbits. Port District #2, which covers the entire city of Pasco, has a population of about 75,000 and District #3, which lies north of Pasco, has a population of about 15,000.

The penalty for noncompliance is a hefty fine and the commissioners can be removed from office.

It is imperative that the commissioners rectify the situation as soon as possible before the government officials do it for them.
