Fire near Sammamish destroys 2 buildings, 15 cars

A two-alarm fire near Sammamish destroyed two buildings and about 15 cars, and closed down a stretch of Highway 202 in both directions Wednesday morning on the Eastside, authorities say.

Redmond-Fall City Road, or Highway 202, has reopened to traffic, the Washington State Department of Transportation said on X shortly after 10:20 a.m.

Multiple people called 911 just after 3 a.m. to report a fire at Rich Landscaping in the 27900 block of Redmond-Fall City Road Northeast, said Eastside Fire and Rescue spokesperson Catherine Imboden.

When crews arrived minutes later, one of the buildings was engulfed, Imboden said.

Crews immediately went into defensive mode but found that the fire hydrant on scene didn't have enough water pressure, so they had to relay water with tenders, or trucks with large tanks of water, which significantly slowed the fight, Imboden said.

The fire quickly spread to the other building, Imboden said. More than 20 fire vehicles from multiple crews responded.

Flames leapt from the charred frame of the buildings in photos and video shared by Eastside Fire and Rescue around 5:50 a.m. Smoke billowed into the air.

Crews had to fight defensively because landscaping, trees and many other cars and buildings were in danger of catching fire, Imboden said.

That was especially true because of Tuesday's warm and dry conditions, Imboden said, and the fact that there was explosive landscaping equipment like lawn mowers, propane tanks, gasoline and trucks in the commercial buildings.

No one was injured in the fire, Imboden said. The business was locked and closed at the time.

The cause of the fire has yet to be determined.
