How to get tickets to see America's founding-era documents at MOHAI

Seattleites will soon have a rare opportunity to see an engraving of the Declaration of Independence and other historical documents from America's founding era at the Museum of History & Industry. From July 30 to Aug. 16, MOHAI will be the final stop of the Freedom Plane National Tour: Documents That Forged a Nation, an exhibition from the National Archives in Washington, D.C., that celebrates America's 250th anniversary this year

During its limited 18-day run, admission to the exhibit will be free; all MOHAI galleries will also be free during that time, the museum announced in a Friday news release. However, MOHAI encourages visitors to use timed-entry tickets in anticipation of high demand.

Beginning June 1, MOHAI members will receive early access to reserve timed-entry tickets. Free public tickets will become available beginning June 15 on the MOHAI website. Member tickets will remain available throughout the exhibit run, and walk-up tickets will be available on site each day as capacity allows. Museum memberships start at $65.

The Freedom Plane National Tour is a new take on the Freedom Train, which transported historical documents across the country for the nation's bicentennial in 1976.

MOHAI is just one of eight museums nationwide selected to display the documents, including stops in Houston, Denver and Miami. Visitors will be able to see an engraving of the Declaration of Independence commissioned by John Quincy Adams in 1823, the Articles of Association adopted by the First Continental Congress in 1774, the Treaty of Paris that formally recognized U.S. independence in 1783, a secret printing of the Constitution in draft form and the tally of votes from the Constitutional Convention of 1787. The records will arrive in Seattle aboard a Boeing 737 in special "Freedom Plane" livery.
