Winlock's 'World's Largest Egg' sports new patriotic paint job for upcoming America250 and Egg Days
With the summer sun shining down, the "World's Largest Egg" in Winlock sported a new America250 paintjob, which fit in perfectly with the dozens of U.S. flags lining the streets of the South Lewis County community on Flag Day, Sunday, June 14.
Paint for the egg's new coat was provided by Rodda Paint Co. in Chehalis, and painting was done by Emily von Flotow.
The idea and design painted on the egg were created by Winlock resident Kathy Chastain and other volunteers from the Friends of Winlock, along with $800 from the City of Winlock.
The flags were set up by Winlock Patriotic Citizens, another group of local volunteers that works to line the city's streets with U.S. flags to celebrate federal holidays. The effort was started by Winlock resident Tommy Thompson.
And while rural midwestern town of Mentone, Indiana, may have an egg that's actually bigger at 10 feet tall, according to visitindiana.in.gov, the current "World's Largest Egg" in Winlock was donated by Vern Zander in 1991 as an ode to the original "World's Giant Egg."
The original was first created in 1923 by John G. Lawrence to celebrate the founding and growth of the Washington Egg & Poultry Co-Operative when hundreds of thousands of egg cases were coming out of the community annually.
That original egg, made of plaster on canvas on a wood frame, was eventually worn out by the elements and replaced by two other eggs before Zander made the fourth one, which still stands displayed at the Vern Zander Memorial Park.
The park is located at the intersection of Old Highway 603 and Fir Street in Winlock.
Von Flotow's paint work on the "World's Largest Egg" was documented on timelapse video by retired U.S. Army Chief Warrant Officer 4 Dave Anderson, who served as a helicopter instructor pilot and now runs the YouTube channel Helicool's Helipad. The Winlock Egg Days festival is this weekend, running June 19 to June 21.
