Comedian Kyle Kinane returns to Wenatchee with 3 nights of laughs

If you're looking for a break from headlines, high prices and whatever fresh chaos the internet has cooked up this week, comedian Kyle Kinane has a simple suggestion: come laugh for a while.

The stand-up comedian returns to the Numerica Performing Arts Center Black Box Comedy Series for three performances at 7:30 p.m. June 18-20 in Wenatchee.

Tickets are available at the Numerica Performing Arts Center box office or at numericapac.org.

Kinane, whose credits include multiple stand-up specials, late-night appearances and years as the voice of Comedy Central promotions, describes his comedy as less about taking aim at society and more about examining his own life.

"It's mostly personal stuff that I think is, hopefully on a relatable level, folks," Kinane said. "I might dive into a little bit of political stuff here and there, but that's not the majority of it."

That introspective approach has defined much of Kinane's career. While some comedians build acts around current events, Kinane finds humor in everyday experiences, awkward observations and the strange turns life takes.

Asked about his writing process, he admitted there isn't much of one.

"Oh sure, yeah, there's no process at all," he said with a laugh.

Instead, ideas are tested in front of audiences and evolve over time.

"If I'm enjoying telling it, people are laughing, then I try to add another little bit and see if they laugh at that."

Fans familiar with Kinane's work also know one recurring theme: cats.

Asked why felines show up so often in his material, Kinane offered a self-deprecating answer.

"What am I talking about? I'm a middle-aged, straight white guy. Does anybody need my hot takes on society?" he said. "But these cats, they're pretty funny to me, so I'll talk about them."

The Portland-based comic is looking forward to returning to North Central Washington. Rather than spending all day indoors before a performance, Kinane hopes to take advantage of the region's summer weather.

"I'm probably going to bring a mountain bike or bring some hiking shoes and go get outside during the day," he said. "Go make the most of being in the Pacific Northwest in June and being outside."

The Wenatchee stop marks the final weekend of what Kinane calls his "season" before taking much of the summer off to recharge and develop new material.

"You've got to live life to write jokes about it," he said. "If I'm just going to the airport and going to the shows, I'm not really doing a lot, living-wise."

As for convincing people to attend, Kinane admits self-promotion isn't exactly his strength.

"Just some doofus with cats that's hanging out," he said. "Hopefully there's some relatability there for all types."

Then, after a pause, he offered perhaps the best sales pitch of all.

"It's kind of lousy out there right now and everything's super expensive, so maybe try and come have a laugh."
