Free virtual tour in Chehalis offers community members a window into the world of dementia

May 22-Assured Hospice and Village Concepts of Chehalis are partnering to host a free Virtual Dementia Tour at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, June 9, at Woodland Village, located at 2100 SW Woodland Circle, Chehalis.

The event is open to the public and limited to 20 participants.

The Virtual Dementia Tour is a sensory experience that allows participants to walk in the shoes of someone living with dementia, according to a news release from event organizers.

Developed by P.K. Beville, M.S., and backed by peer-reviewed research, the tour uses patented sensory tools to simulate the cognitive, physical and emotional challenges faced by individuals with Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia.

"Until you experience what it feels like to live with dementia, it's nearly impossible to fully understand the daily struggles these individuals face," said Lindsay Giberson, senior account executive at Assured Hospice. "This tour changes the way people think about dementia care - whether they are professional caregivers, family members or simply community members who want to better understand their neighbors."

During the approximately 10-minute guided experience, participants will be equipped with specialized gear that alters their senses - affecting their vision, hearing, touch and dexterity - to replicate the sensory and cognitive impairments caused by dementia, the release stated.

Participants will then attempt to complete simple everyday tasks under these conditions. A facilitated debrief session follows, where participants discuss their experience and learn practical strategies for communicating with and caring for people living with dementia.
