Overview
The 2025 BMW X4 is a compact luxury coupe SUV based on the X3, but with a longer and lower fastback body that makes it less practical but more stylish. The xDrive30i comes with a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine with 248 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque, while the M40i packs a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder with 382 hp and 369 lb-ft. There is an even more powerful 6-cylinder X4 M with over 500 hp, but that M trim is not included in this review.
With nearly 24 cu-ft of cargo space, this is still a usable and capable SUV, despite its style focus. For maximum space utilization, the X3 wins, but the X4 is for people putting style and engaging driving dynamics over practicality.
What's New for 2025
The 2025 X4 is the second generation's last model year, with no replacement confirmed. The last significant refresh was for the 2022 model year, and there are almost no changes this year, except for the standardization of heated front seats across the range. Remote start has also been added to the Premium and Convenience packages, while black Vernasca leather with contrast stitching is a newly available interior finish.
Exterior
Being an older generation of BMW, the X4's face is still stylishly traditional, and the kidney grille has sane proportions, with sharp 2-pod LED headlights and DRLs on either side. It's at the rear that it departs from the X3, with a gracefully sloping roofline and fastback silhouette. Both trims run on 19-inch alloy wheels, but the M40i adds the M Sport package with M Sport brakes, blue callipers, quad exhausts, Shadowline trim, and a panoramic sunroof. With a length of 187.6 inches and a height of 63.8 inches, the X4 is longer and lower than the X3, but sits on the same 112.8-inch wheelbase.
Interior
The iDrive 8 infotainment system comprises a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster and a 14.9-inch touchscreen with a digital key, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a 12-speaker Harman Kardon audio system. SensaTec leatherette upholstery, heated front seats, and dual-zone climate control are standard, and the M40i gains a panoramic sunroof.
Cargo volume behind the rear seats is also less at 23.7 cu-ft comapred to 28.7 cu-ft, and the rear seat is also smaller; its 35.5 inches of legroom and 37.2 inches of headroom are 0.9 and 1.3 inches down on the X3, respectively.
Price Range
The 2025 BMW X4's price list starts at just over $55K. Prices exclude destination of $1,175. All trims have standard xDrive AWD.

Pros and Cons
Pros:
- M40i with 382 hp and 4.4-second 0-60 delivers genuine performance SUV acceleration
- iDrive 8 with 14.9-inch curved touchscreen is among the best infotainment systems available
- Standard AWD and composed handling make the X4 engaging on twisty roads
- 3 years / 36,000 miles of included maintenance reduces early ownership costs
Cons:
- Sloping roofline reduces rear headroom and cargo space compared to the X3
- Rear visibility through the narrow back window is significantly compromised
- No hybrid or PHEV option available in the X4 lineup
- $12,500 jump from xDrive30i to M40i is steep, though justified by performance
Verdict
The X4 is meant for people who find the X3 to traditional and don't mind sacrificing a little trunk and rear-seat space for style and a sporty disposition. The M40i feels a lot like a lifted hot hatch, with that potent I6 engine, M suspension, and M Sport brakes making it surprisingly fun. The 4-pot is adequate for most people, but the engine doesn't have the charisma of the 6-cylinder. The X4 is a fairly practical way to gain access to decent SUV practicality, but time is running out if you're in the market for one, because this is its last model year, and no replacement is in sight yet.
