1994 Classic 'The Shawshank Redemption' Ranked Best Film of All Time

The Shawshank Redemption often finds itself near the top of any ranking of the greatest films ever made, even landing at No. 1 on IMDb's infamous Top 250 list, but the film almost wasn't a success at all.

Much of the critical adoration that's been thrown at The Shawshank Redemption came after the fact. Upon its release, Frank Darabont's gritty prison drama was a moderate financial disappointment, and critics weren't always quick to come to its defence.

Released in 1994, The Shawshank Redemption stars Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman as Andy Dufresne and Ellis Redding, two prisoners who become close friends behind prison walls when the former is incarcerated for a crime he didn't commit.

The movie is inspired by Stephen King's short story, RitaHayworth and Shawshank Redemption, which was considered one of the author's lesser-known titles before the film increased its popularity. In fact, King has frequently said that Darabont's movie is his favorite adaptation of any of his works-of which there's no shortage to choose from.

However, when The Shawshank Redemption was initially released in theaters, the film only made $29.4 million at the box office against a reported budget of $25 million (via Box Office Mojo). With the added marketing and distribution costs, the film ended up losing money for Columbia Pictures.

Thankfully, The Shawshank Redemption ultimately found success thanks to its strong awards campaign, which pushed the film to seven nominations at the Academy Awards. Although it later failed to win any of the categories it was nominated in, the high nomination tally finally persuaded audiences that perhaps the film was worth watching after all.

After its theatrical run, The Shawshank Redemption was released on over 320,000 VHS rentals across the United States, and its strong word-of-mouth helped it become the best-selling VHS release of 1994. It was shown regularly on network television-particularly the TNT channel-and soon become an undisputed cult classic despite its initial disappointment.

Today, The Shawshank Redemption is adored for its enduring legacy and powerful story of friendship, perserverence, and moral purity in the face of corruption and injustice. Darabont took everything that worked about King's short story and elevated it, delivering a feel-good drama that audiences continue to fall in love with.
