Tense Yellowstone Standoff Between Wolf and Grizzly Bear Caught on Camera
America's National Parks are home to some of the nation's most breathtaking and awe-inspiring landscapes, but they're also home to incredible animals that we don't often see in the city and suburbs. Although wolves and bears are just two of the biggest and fiercest creatures that call our National Parks home, it isn't every day that these animals are seen together.
Early in the morning on Monday, May 4, a group of lucky hikers, photographers, and videographers, including Matt Zefi, encountered a rare sight in Yellowstone National Park-a standoff between a grizzly bear and a gray wolf. The predators challenged one another to a showdown over a fresh meal as ravens, people, and other wolves watched close by.
@mattzefi An incredible day in Yellowstone! Watching a wolf and grizzly face off this morning #wolves#yellowstone#grizzly

Talk about a tense moment! Everyone watching on the opposite side of the river held their breath as the animals squared off, though no one was as riveted as the raven watching intently in the background. They know they're the true winner regardless of how this fight ends, because they'll get to pick at the leftovers no matter what!
"So, is that a small grizzly or are wolves that big?" commenter @gssillgoeatworms commented. That's the question on everyone's mind! The massive bird only adds to the out-of-proportion perspective, but luckily, @mattzefi cleared up the confusion.
This wolf is facing off with a young grizzly bear! In just a few more years, the bear will be even larger, and wolves may not mess with him again. But for now, the brave pack of gray wolves still sees a formidable opponent.
@mattzefi More footage from yesterday's face off in Yellowstone. This one I filmed in slow motion and I'm super grateful to have witnessed it. Apologies for the use of a sound, I would've much preferred the raw audio, but I don't have it because of filming in slow motion. #yellowstone#grizzly#wolves

Experiencing this furry face-off in person must have been a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for Matt and the other lucky photographers, but it would be understandable to feel both on edge and in awe. After all, humans would be no match for either of these predators. Fortunately, everyone seemed to have kept their distance, but other animal encounters in Yellowstone are making headlines.
Wild Animal Encounters in Yellowstone National Park
Last week, tourists had a close call when a bear wandered onto a boardwalk at a Yellowstone thermal feature. No one was injured during the bizarre encounter, but it certainly left visitors feeling anxious. Fortunately, staying on marked paths and following park rangers' instructions is a sure-fire way to avoid any bear-related problems.

Also, it's important to remember that most of the animals you'll spot in Yellowstone are much smaller. One of these mystery animals even wandered into a Yellowstone hotel to give staff the most memorable check-in ever. You really never know what to expect when visiting National Parks!
