Netflix Quietly Cancels New Show 'Bandi' Weeks After First Season Ends

Netflix produces over 700 original titles every year for its more than 200 million monthly users.

Its produced hits like Stranger Things, Narcos and Dark, which sit in the pantheon of greatest shows ever produced. However, not every new show can be a smash hit with the audience.

New data shows one in five shows produced by Netflix is canceled. That was the case for one of the streaming giant's newest shows.

'Bandi' Canceled After Just 1 Season

Netflix made the decision to cancel French show Bandi after just one season, weeks after the show initially debuted in early April.

"A difficult decision that was not taken lightly," Netflix said in a statement to French site RCI, which was translated to English by Google.

Despite its decision to cancel the show, Netflix remains proud of the product – even if it was for just one season.

"More than just a series, a true cultural moment that showcased Martinican talent, driven by the vision of Eric and Capucine Rochant and the exceptional commitment of the actors and the entire team," it said. "We are extremely proud of Bandi."

What Is Bandi?

Created by father-daughter team Eric and Capucine Rochant, Bandi is a gritty family drama set in the French-controlled territory of Martinique, an island in the West Indies. The eight-episode French-language crime series stars local Martinicans, like trap artist Evil P, in their debut acting roles.

"When the matriarch of the Lafleur family dies in a traffic collision on her way to work, 11 orphaned brothers and sisters - all between the ages of 23 and 7 - must unite to keep their family financially stable and their youngest siblings out of foster care," Netflix describes.

"But there's discord among the elder siblings about how exactly to stay afloat: Some want to honor their mother's strong sense of morality and struggle through the process of launching new, legal businesses, while others are fine with resorting to robbery and drug dealing to ensure a quick cash flow."

How Was the First Season Received?

In its first week, Bandi amassed 16 million hours viewed globally (2.1 million views/CVE). The show jumped to 40.5 million hours viewed in its second week, establishing a steady presence in the Top 10 of many countries, according to What's on Netflix.

All eight episodes of the first season can be streamed now.
