It only takes a split second for a happy outing to turn into a lost dog situation, and for one family, their adventurous hound dog did exactly that. Ruger was camping with his parents in the Tillamook State Forest in Oregon when his hunting dog instincts took him on an accidental adventure. What followed was a tense and ultimately relieving dog rescue story that neither Ruger nor his family will ever forget.

After Ruger chased a herd of elk into the woods, he spent three days lost in the forest alone before his dad finally found him. Mom and dog mom @caitiearends1723 shared the emotional moment with her followers on April 23, who couldn't be more thrilled for the reunited family.

Ruger, our Treeing Walker Coonhound ran out of our camp after some elk and was completely gone. After searching for a little over 3 days doing all the recommended things and driving around in the sxs my husband came upon him standing in the middle of one of the roads. He was 2.5 miles away and 1000ft up in elevation from our camp. We never thought we would see our boy again and are SO glad he is home safe. #dogsoftiktok#treeingwalkercoonhound#animalrescue#reunited#happyendings

Poor Ruger, a Treeing Walker Coonhound, was so nervous when he finally saw his dad; he probably thought he was dreaming! That whine of pure relief says it all, though his mom thinks he would've been much louder if he'd had any voice left to spare. He must've been calling out for days!

"I'm so glad you found him," @abby24f commented. "We have a dog who was on a hike with my dad, and she chased after a deer and also got lost. She was in the Rocky Mountains for a week! But we found her, too." I can't imagine what a relief that must have been!

Caitlin confided in her viewers that she was convinced they'd never see Ruger again in the vast Tillamook Forest. Even commenter @unratedbs admitted, "As someone who does [search and rescue] in Oregon forests, I am amazed and so glad you found him." There's no question this is a miracle in the making, but what can pet parents do to increase the chances of reuniting with a missing animal just like Caitlin and her husband did?

How To Find a Missing Dog

It may seem nearly impossible to find a missing dog, but with the right tools, pet parents can find the needle in the haystack. Even so, it can be difficult to find the right accessories to use in such remote areas. Several commenters suggested attaching an AirTag to Ruger's collar, but this wouldn't help in areas with no cell signal.

Instead, a GPS tracker that sends data via satellite can be a better choice. A microchip can also help when someone finds a lost dog, as a quick scan can reveal the dog's family's contact information.

Of course, the best way to stop a problem like this is to prevent a dog from going missing in the first place. Even the most predictable and well-behaved canines will be safer on a long lead rather than roaming free, just in case their prey drive kicks in. After all, better safe than sorry!
