Dachshund Attempts To ‘Co-Parent'-Hearts Melt Over What He Does by Newborn

A new mom has melted hearts across the internet after sharing a tender moment between her dachshund and baby during their first day together.

Professional tennis player Daria Saville, 32, welcomed her son Louie on March 6, and it's safe to say, her dog is obsessed with the new addition. Saville, of Melbourne, Australia, captured the adorable moment her six-year-old dachshund named Tofu did everything he could to get his new brother's attention (despite the fact he was fast asleep).

The precious moment shows Tofu standing on his hind legs and pawing in the direction of the bassinet where his brother slept. Saville told Newsweek that this begging action is Tofu's "favorite trick" and he loves doing it. In this instance, Saville jested that he was possibly "begging for the baby's safety."

Saville shared the footage on Instagram (@daria_sav) and internet users can't get enough, leading to more than 470,000 views and over 22,000 likes at the time of writing.

"Honestly, Tofu just wants me to be on it every time the newborn makes a peep," Saville said. "Even now, if I go for a shower and the baby is in his bed, Tofu will literally come and get me. He is still very protective, but he is calmer and has got used to the baby making noises. He doesn’t get as stressed anymore because we taught him that it was OK."

Prior to welcoming Louie in March, Saville was understandably nervous about how Tofu would react. But in the weeks since bringing him home, Tofu has proven just how loving and welcoming he can be.

Saville couldn't be more grateful for how Tofu has adapted to this new chapter, and she loves seeing the amusing ways he tries to help out.

She said: "I thought there could be four scenarios: the first was that he would just ignore the baby, the second was that he’d get jealous, the third and worst would be aggression towards the baby. In the end, we got the fourth option-a co-parent in dog form."

The response to the Instagram video is beyond anything Saville expected. She has been inundated with love and support from her social media followers, as she told Newsweek that she hopes to "build a community of moms" who can be there for one another. Since welcoming Louie, she has regularly asked questions and sought advice from fellow parents, which she says has been an overwhelmingly joyous experience.

Many Instagram users reached out to praise Tofu's brotherly support, leading to more than 160 comments on the post so far.

One comment reads: "Best friends forever. So happy for you!"

Another Instagram user replied: "They’ll be the best little buddies. Congratulations."

While another person added: "They're already talking to each other."
