'Lanterns' teaser: Kyle Chandler trains Aaron Pierre in DC series

May 18 (UPI) -- HBO Max is giving a glimpse of the new series Lanterns.

The streaming service shared a teaser trailer for the show Monday featuring Kyle Chandler (Friday Night Lights, Bloodline) and Aaron Pierre (Krypton, Genius).

Lanterns is a detective drama based on the Green Lanterns group of superheroes from DC Comics. The teaser shows veteran Green Lantern member Hal Jordan (Chandler) train John Stewart (Pierre) and challenge him to be "fearless."

"The series follows new recruit John Stewart an Lantern legend Hal Jordan, two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland," a press release reads.

Kelly Macdonald, Nathan Fillion and Laura Linney also star.

Lanterns is created by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof and Tom King, and premieres Aug. 16 on HBO. It will also stream on HBO Max.

Ryan Reynolds previously portrayed Jordan in the 2011 film Green Lantern.
