Counter-Strike 2 Officially Releases Cache Map With A Modern Yet Reminiscent Look
Cache is finally back as an official Counter-Strike map, as revealed by Valve in a blog post on April 29. The revamped version sports impressive graphics and higher-quality textures, yet retains the same grimy, defunct atmosphere that defined the identity of the map's original iterations. Let's take a quick tour of the latest version of de_cache to discover new changes that might shape the way this map is played.

A Classic Time Capsule
Valve's own take on Cache is remarkably different from the previous theme of maroon bricks and overgrown vegetation. The newly released version perfectly encapsulates the industrial aesthetic of the Soviet era in the 80s, replacing bricks with steel and hanging vines with rust and broken glass. While it might look like a drastic change, FMPONE (one of the original makers) applauded the implementation of the design and even calling Valve "the best" at doing it.
I love the authenticity in their version, a lot of those material ideas (the subtle white bricks and tile) are actually really tough to pull off and integrate cohesively and they make it look easy and effortless. Like I said, they are the best.
Valve's Cache presents a much ‘cleaner' look than the initial beta. The walls are mostly painted white with patches of desaturated green, blue, and orange. Even though this palette is chosen to improve the visibility of other players, there is still a hint of vibrance from the warm glow of the afternoon sun, notably as it shines through B site and CT spawn.
One Less Hole To Worry About
Even though Cache's visual rework has turned into a complete overhaul, the layout and gameplay overall stayed the same, except for one spot. Unlike in every previous iteration of the map, the window at "Z" (also known as "Connector") is now closed and replaced with an unbreakable, translucent glass window. The window spot was often a popular opening for CTs to set up utility smokes and flashes towards mid, and for Ts to flash or smoke anyone going across CT highway.
Cache Is Back, And It's A Big Deal
Despite Cache's history of being in and out of Active Duty (a competitive map rotation), the map was rarely controversial and was highly popular whenever it was part of the competitive rotation. Even before this re-release, Steam Workshop versions of Cache are highly popular in the community, with FMPONE and Volcano's beta version accruing an impressive 1.3 million subscribers. A week prior, this unofficial beta version was also added to the popular third-party service FACEIT, demonstrating the map's strong appeal to both casual and competitive players.
At the moment, Cache is only available in Casual, Competitive, Deathmatch, and Retake. It's still unknown when the map will be added to Premier matchmaking, though the change is likely to occur after the conclusion of Cologne Major in June. This might be a similar case to Overpass's return to Active Duty, which occurred a month after last year's Austin Major in June.
