'Lee Cronin's The Mummy' and 10 other monster movies, TV series

April 17 (UPI) --Lee Cronin's The Mummy, a new film reimagining the classic horror monster, opens in theaters Friday.

Inspired by the character created by Universal Studios, this Mummy stars Jack Reynor and Laia Costa as Charlie and Larissa, a couple whose daughter Katie (Natalie Grace) returns home years after she went missing in the desert.

Lee Cronin (Evil Dead Rise) directs the feature, with James Wan and Jason Blum among the producers.

The Mummy has been brought to the big screen numerous times, including as a 1932 film starring Boris Karloff and a 1999 movie starring Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz. Here's a list of 10 other films and TV series about monsters:

'From'

The sci-fi horror series premiered on Epix in 2022 and will return for a fourth season April 19 on MGM+.

Harold Perrineau stars as Boyd Stevens, the sheriff of a small town surrounded by shape-shifting monsters. Other cast members include Catalina Sandino Moreno, Eion Bailey, David Alpay and Jade Herrera.

From is created by John Griffin and executive produced by Anthony and Joe Russo, the directors of Avengers: Endgame and other films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The series was renewed for a fifth and final season this week.

'Godzilla Minus One'

The 2023 Japanese film written and directed by Takashi Yamazaki is the latest movie in the Godzilla franchise created by Toho.

Set in post-World War II Japan, Ryunosuke Kamiki stars as Koichi, a former kamikaze pilot who encounters the kaiju, or giant monster, known as Godzilla.

Godzilla Minus One is available to stream on Netflix. The sequel Godzilla Minus Zero is slated to open in theaters in November and released a first teaser trailer Tuesday.

Other recent media to feature Godzilla includes the 2024 American film Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire and the Apple TV series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, which returned for a second season in February.

'Sweet Home'

Netflix released three seasons of the South Korean apocalyptic horror series between 2020 and 2024.

Based on the Naver webtoon, the show follows Cha Hyun-su (Song) and other residents of the Green Home apartment complex as they attempt to survive in a world where humans suddenly start transforming into monsters.

Sweet Home also stars Lee Jin-wook and Lee Si-young, and is available to stream on Netflix.

'Penny Dreadful'

The horror drama series from John Logan had a three-season run on Showtime from 2014 to 2016.

Inspired by penny dreadfuls, cheap 19th-century publications with sensational stories, the show brings to life classic monsters including Dorian Gray, Dracula, Frankenstein's monster and Henry Jekyll.

Eva Green stars as Vanessa Ives, a medium searching for her childhood best friend, Mina (Olivia Llewellyn), a character first introduced in Bram Stoker's classic horror novel Dracula.

Timothy Dalton, Josh Hartnett, Reeve Carney, Rory Kinnear and Billie Piper also star in Penny Dreadful, which is available to stream on Showtime. The show was followed by the sequel series Penny Dreadful: City of Angels, which aired in 2020.

'The Ritual'

The 2017 folk horror film is directed by David Bruckner, a filmmaker known for The Signal and V/H/S.

Rafe Spall, Arsher Ali, Robert James-Collier and Sam Troughton star as four friends who embark on a hiking trip in Sweden after their friend Rob is killed. After getting lost, the group encounters a terrifying creature in the forest.

The Ritual is available to stream on Netflix.

'The Cabin in the Woods'

The 2011 comedy horror film marks the directorial debut of Buffy and Lost writer Drew Goddard.

Poking fun at horror genre tropes, the movie stars Kristen Connolly, Chris Hemsworth, Anna Huthison, Fran Kranz and Jesse Williams as a group of college friends who are terrorized by monsters while staying at a remote cabin.

The Cabin in the Woods also features Richard Jenkins and Bradley Whitford. The movie is available to stream on Prime Video.

'Attack the Block'

The 2011 British sci-fi comedy horror film is written and directed by Joe Cornish (Ant-Man).

The movie marks the film debut of Star Wars: The Force Awakens actor John Boyega, who plays Moses, a teenage gang leader who teams up with a nurse-in-training (Jodie Whittaker) when alien creatures invade.

Attack the Block is available to rent on streaming platforms.

'Trollhunter'

The 2010 Norwegian movie from André Øvredal is presented in a "found footage" mockumentary format.

Thomas Arf Larsen, Johanna Mørck and Glenn Erland Tosterud star as a group of college students attempting to make a documentary about an alleged bear poacher. After meeting the suspect, the trio learn there is more than bears in the woods.

Trollhunter is available to stream on Prime Video, YouTube, Tubi and the Roku Channel.

'The Host'

The 2006 South Korean monster movie is directed and co-written by Bong Joon-ho, the Oscar-winning director of Parasite.

The film is an early collaboration between Bong and Song Kang-ho, who plays Park Gang-du, a father whose dysfunctional family must work together after his daughter Hyun-seo (Go Ah-sung) is taken by a mutant creature.

Byun Hee-bong, Park Hae-il, Bae Doona and Go Ah-sung also star.

The Host is available to stream on Hulu, Disney+ and Prime Video.

'The Descent'

The 2005 British horror film is written and directed by Neil Marshall, a writer and director who also worked on the HBO series Game of Thrones.

Shauna Macdonald stars as Sarah, a grieving woman who embarks on a spelunking trip with a group of five other women. While exploring the cave, the party encounters monstrous creatures known as crawlers.

Other cast members include Natalie Mendoza, Alex Reid, MyAnna Buring, Saskia Mulder and Nora-Jane Noone.

The Descentwas re-released in theaters in October to mark its 20th anniversary. The film is available to stream on Prime Video, Tubi and the Roku Channel.
