Best of the West in need of volunteers

I got an email today from Sandra Kerr, hoping that I could get the word out for volunteers for the upcoming Best of the West wrestling tournament Dec. 22-23 at Pasco High School.

Our boys played Grid Kids together (oh so long ago), so it's hard to say no.

This year, the tournament will have 36 teams instead of 32. Team duals will be held on Day 1, while individual weight brackets will be Day 2.

This is the 12th year of the tournament, and is run mainly by volunteers. Sandra said there is a need for table scorers, timers, blood clean up personnel and towel tappers for both days and scorers/stats for Day 2. Each shift is two hours, and by the end of the weekend, 340 time slots need to be filled. Volunteers need to be middle school age or older.

Also, people are needed to staff the hospitality room, and donations of food are welcome.

If you are able to help, contact Sandra at 947-4655 or by e-mail:

I have covered this tournament many times, and it brings together the best from Hermiston to Royal City. If you are a wrestling fan, this is a must-see tournament, either as a fan or a volunteer.
